The Art of Naming Hats

A gathering of anonymity.
Sameness stared out from under blackened brims.
Banksman, Bogyman, The Fu-Fu Gang,
Different names together in similar hymns.

When the lights went out, darkness left them
Under the swillie, miming silent prayer,
For chances to hear a cuckoo one more time
And doff their caps in an afternoon air.

  1. The first line is a powerful delivery of the commonness we share as a society. So many live their lives in the shadows of never knowing any better, placed where they are due to circumstance, and accepting it as their only chance. Your writing offers a platter of thought and wonder, Davy. 🙂

    1. Thank you for your kind and inspiring words, Terveen. What you say is right. People from coal mining communities took every chance from life, even though their circumstances gave them very little. I was fortunate to be brought up in such a community and gained most of my life skills from them. I appreciate your thoughts.🙏
